Tarot and the Moon: How Lunar Phases Influence Your Readings

The Moon has long been associated with mystery, magic, and the unseen. In the realm of Tarot, it represents intuition, hidden truths, and the rhythms of our inner worlds. But beyond the symbolism of the Moon card itself, the actual lunar phases can profoundly influence your Tarot practice. Understanding how each moon phase aligns with specific energies can help you time your readings for greater clarity, power, and insight.

Why the Moon Matters in Tarot

The Moon governs water, emotion, dreams, and intuition—all things Tarot is designed to tap into. As the moon waxes and wanes in the sky, it reflects cycles of growth, rest, and release within ourselves. When you work with the lunar phases, you’re syncing your spiritual practice with the natural flow of energy that surrounds us, adding depth and rhythm to your readings.

The Phases of the Moon and Their Tarot Energies

New Moon – Intentions & Shadow Work

This is a time of beginnings, planting seeds, and looking inward. The energy is quiet but full of potential. Tarot readings during the New Moon are perfect for:

  • Clarifying intentions for the month ahead
  • Shadow work and unconscious exploration
  • Asking, “What is ready to be born in me?”

Recommended spreads: Intention-setting spreads, “What’s Hidden?” spreads, or spreads that focus on new opportunities.

Waxing Crescent – Building & Focus

As the moon begins to grow, so does our energy. This phase is all about momentum and refinement. Tarot during this phase can help you:

  • Fine-tune your goals
  • Gain insight into what’s needed to move forward
  • Explore what blocks you from action

Recommended spreads: Progress check-ins, motivation spreads, or clarity spreads.

First Quarter – Decision & Action

The energy here becomes stronger and more assertive. Obstacles might arise, but you’re also more prepared to meet them. Use Tarot now to:

  • Weigh options and make important decisions
  • Discover where resistance lies
  • Push through mental or emotional blocks

Recommended spreads: “Crossroads” spreads, “Action Steps” layouts, or “What’s Holding Me Back?” spreads.

Waxing Gibbous – Refinement & Patience

The almost-full moon asks us to pause and polish. You’re almost there—but not quite. This phase supports introspection and patience. Tarot readings here are great for:

  • Reviewing plans and making adjustments
  • Gaining emotional clarity
  • Strengthening belief in your path

Recommended spreads: Review spreads, “What Needs My Attention?” spreads, or self-belief layouts.

Full Moon – Illumination & Release

This is the peak of lunar energy. Everything is heightened—emotionally, spiritually, intuitively. The truth is laid bare, and it’s a powerful time for:

  • Big-picture clarity
  • Release and letting go
  • Celebrating accomplishments and awareness

Recommended spreads: Full moon release spreads, “What’s Come to Light?” spreads, or celebration and closure spreads.

Waning Gibbous – Integration & Gratitude

As the moon begins to wane, it’s time to absorb what you’ve learned. Reflective energy dominates, making this ideal for:

  • Journaling through readings
  • Integrating Tarot insights
  • Exploring what to carry forward

Recommended spreads: Gratitude spreads, integration spreads, or “What Did I Learn?” layouts.

Last Quarter – Reflection & Releasing What Didn’t Work

This phase invites reevaluation and cleansing. It’s the spiritual composting phase—let go of what didn’t serve. Tarot readings can help you:

  • Identify lessons from challenges
  • Prepare for release
  • Reconnect to your core truths

Recommended spreads: “What Needs to Go?” spreads, lessons learned, or forgiveness spreads.

Waning Crescent – Rest & Surrender

Just before the New Moon, this phase asks us to pause completely. It’s a time of surrender and restoration. Tarot is best used gently, or not at all. If you read, keep it soft and nurturing:

  • Seek comfort and spiritual support
  • Ask about deep rest and reset
  • Look inward, not outward

Recommended spreads: Healing spreads, spiritual guidance spreads, or dream-based questions.

Making Lunar Tarot a Ritual

You don’t need to perform a reading every phase to benefit from lunar Tarot. Even syncing your practice with the New Moon and Full Moon can create powerful structure and intention in your spiritual work. Consider pairing your readings with lunar journaling, candle work, moon water, or crystal charging to deepen the experience.

Final Thoughts

Working with the Moon in your Tarot practice isn’t about perfection—it’s about alignment. By listening to the rhythm of the lunar cycle, you’re tuning into your intuition more naturally and deeply. Whether you’re drawing a single card or performing a full Celtic Cross, the Moon is always a quiet companion, ready to guide your hand and your heart.

Let the moonlight shine on your path—and your Tarot.

Tarot Decks: 78 Tarot Astral

After the success that was the 78 Tarot, the creators decided to produce more decks that were similar, but also entirely different. The 78 Tarot series has several decks now, one of them is the 78 Tarot Astral deck. The 78 Tarot Astral is once again created by 78 different artists, including Larry Elmore, Ravynne Phelan, and Jasmine Beckett-Griffith.

The deck has a space or astral theme, with card having a unique and colorful appearance. The 78 Tarot Astral was self published by Trish Sullivan in 2017. These days, it's not easy to get. It's out or print, and it was rare even when it was in print. If you have one of these beautiful decks, cherish it. It's a great addition to any Tarot collection.

Tarot Decks: 78 Tarot

The 78 Tarot is an interesting deck because it is a global art collaboration from 78 different artists. Each card is illustrated by a different artist, among them fantasy artists Larry Elmore and Jasmine Beckett-Griffith. Each card is unique and inspiring. The artwork comes from many genres, not just fantasy. Some cards are created digitally, others are drawn and colored more traditionally. All are lovely and make the perfect deck.

Based on the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, 78 Tarot was first published in 2014 and is accompanied by an 84-page booklet that not only includes the traditional meaning of the cards but also information about the artists and the cards' creation.

Further information about this deck and its availability can be found at the 78 Tarot Etsy Shop.
